Propagation

A plant will have many canes depending on its age. A cane is an individual stem of a blueberry bush. A new, young cane is also referred to as a whip. The new canes or whips are ideal for propagating new plants from hardwood or softwood cuttings. The light green canes you see in the photograph below are from last year's growth and could be taken as hardwood cuttings in mid-March in Kentucky, when the plant is just starting to get new leaves. Anyone having mature blueberry plants, time, patience, and space can have success with propagation.

For more information on propagation, please call our office, or visit the University of Kentucky's Agriculture Department website.
